Mt Jagged Wines Location
Southern Fleurieu Wine Region
The Southern Fleurieu wine region is located just south of the McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills wine regions and was approved as a separate region in 2001. The first vines were planted in the region was in 1853 by Frenchman Buxton Laurie whose vineyard subsequently burnt down in bushfires in the late 19th Century. The selections of vineyard soil “terroir” and climate chosen by early vignerons were confirmed as ‘premium” areas by internationally renowned John Gladstones. He stated in his publication “Viticulture and Environment” that “the lower Fleurieu Peninsula” has what appears to be the best climate in mainland South Australia f0r making table wines. The Southern Fleurieu wine region is currently experiencing a wine growing renaissance with over 40 vineyards and 10 wineries/cellar door outlets.
